MANIFESTO
NewSpace: A transformation in how we access space, sparked by the intersection of entrepreneurial innovation with our unrelenting human desire to push boundaries and explore the unknown.
As access to space transitions from monolithic government sponsorship to being entrepreneurially driven, the cost of space is lessening.
However, success in space will always be very hard. Small details missed create catastrophic losses: unexpected thrust tail-off causing Falcon 1’s stages to bump and fail; a small switch mistaking the jiggle of a landing leg as touchdown turning off Mars Polar Lander’s landing rockets 100 feet too high.
To lessen these losses, BigSpace programs relied on layers of bureaucracy and process, creating unimaginably expensive space programs that still can fail.
NewSpace has recognized this model as unsustainable. It replaces the bureaucracy and teams of thousands, with innovation, lean practices and high performance teams. However, NewSpace will only succeed by leveraging Deep Experience from those that have spent decades overcoming the immense challenges of spaceflight. This kind of experience can only come from an intimate familiarity with hundreds of failures and near-failures in spacecraft.
Purdy Engineering provides this experience in spacecraft mechanical and systems engineering. Bill Purdy’s involvement with dozens of challenging, innovative spacecraft programs over the past three decades is a priceless asset to NewSpace.
“It’s simple...I’m the guy that foresees the problems in a satellite development that my customer may not have the experience to anticipate. I’m here to remove design deficiencies before the building begins.”
